The super size meal dilemma – Part 9

Isn’t it great how the portions in junk food restaurants seem to be getting bigger all the time? Bigger burgers, bigger portions of fries, even bigger Cokes! Never again will we leave such a place feeling in any way unsatisfied. We may even have to loosen our belts to accommodate what we have just eaten!

There is even an added bonus – we will now be taking ten years off our lives with all these vile, artificial chemical preservatives and saturated fats instead of five!

Junk food – and I use that term quite deliberately, as I consider fast food an entirely different concept – is one of the biggest killers in Western society today. For many years, medical experts have warned us about the dangers of alcohol and particularly tobacco products but for a long time no one gave thought to the “food” we were eating and precisely what it was doing to our bodies. Saturated fats clogging our arteries, free radicals feasting on the chemicals, sugar and salt in almost overdose proportions – what are we thinking of when we bite in to these food items? It always makes me laugh that these “restaurants” banned smoking on health grounds! Given the choice of ten cigarettes or a traditional burger and fries, I know which I would choose as the healthier option!

Naturally, I am not in any way condoning smoking but for a long time I have been on a form of crusade to try to waken people up to the dangers of the junk food society. Once in a while of course is fine but if we are eating such two, three or more times a week, we have to recognise that we may have a serious problem brewing.

So why are these chains increasing the portions which they serve us? They are quite simply combining psychology and economics to perfect effect. Let us break it down in to very simple terms.

Imagine it costs a junk food chain one currency unit to make that which it subsequently sells to you for five currency units. They have made four currency units of profit. What if, however, they double the portions and sell it to you for eight currency units. You are in seventh heaven – double the amount for considerably less than double the price! This is really a “restaurant” that cares about its customers and goes out of its way to satisfy their needs. You have to come here more often.

Is it really? They have just made six currency units of profit from you instead of four! It cost them two units to make it and they sold it to you for eight. That is an economic fact, not an opinion – please think about it.

So how do we resist the temptation of these super-sized meals? I would suggest three very simple ways. The obvious one of course is quite simply not to go there and buy your own food and eat at home. Another idea is to buy one between two and exercise a little old-fashioned will power. The other option is to drink a pint of water before you eat, order the regular sized meal and drink another pint of water afterwards. This will have the effect of making you feel full – and naturally water is a much healthier option.

I hope that I have resolved the mystery of these “bargain” meals and helped you to see why they are anything but a bargain or a good idea. Eat healthier – and live longer.
