Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid is water soluble vitamin that is not stored in the body and must be replaced each day. Kids need to ingest it from their diet or supplements (high doses of vitamins are not recommended).

Vitamin C is important for maintaining a healthy immune system, helps the body fight stress and enhances collagen production that are needed for healthy skin, cartilage, bones, teeth & connective tissue. It also helps in increasing iron and calcium absorption. A 12-week extensive clinical trial (double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled) performed by a team of scientists headed by Yu Quin and WenHua Ling at Sun Yat-Sen University and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2009, where 320mg of purified anthocyanins or placebo were administered to 120 dyslipidemic patients. Anthocyanins supplementation resulted in a 13.7 percent increase in levels of HDL cholesterol, and a 13.6 percent reduction in levels of LDL cholesterol.

“These results are even more significant when considered in the light that no other dietary or pharmacological modification was implemented (as it can be seen by the opposite deleterious change in blood lipid levels in the placebo group),” said Corredor, “suggesting that the observed effects are fully attributable to anthocyanin (Medox) supplementation.”

Medox is mainly marketed through therapists and other health practitioners as well as through pharmacies. The product is recommended by increasingly more doctors as well as the heart and lung associations in both Norway and Sweden. It has been on the market since 2001, without documenting any possible side effects, and introduced to the US market two years ago.

So I’ve taken to having smoothies for breakfast because I’m just not a breakfast eater anymore! Right now I make a smoothie that has about a glass of apple juice, a cup of yoghurt, two cups of berries (mix of cranberries, blueberries, blackcurrants and raspberries), a banana and two tablespoons of flax seed oil. I feel like I should probably get more protein in there but I’m not sure how. I found some recipes on line that include tofu in them but I’m not that keen on tofu. I thought about adding a raw egg but I’m concerned about getting sick. I’ve thought about protein powder, but I’d rather stick to something natural rather than a supplement.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have protein with other meals (nuts and fruit for snacks, peanut butter or chicken for lunch, chicken or lentils etc for dinner) it’s just breakfast, but I feel like that’s probably the time to have it, esp as I’m so tired in the morning!

The yogurt has protein. Have some whole grain toast on the side. Each slice of whole wheat bread has about 5 grams protein.
